Recently I sold my 500th set of Astropixels through my web store (in reality its more than that, because a few have been sold in person and gifted some for good causes), and to celebrate I donated another £500 to our club charity. (Along with sending a few extra goodies along with the 500th set)
So I thought I’d do a post to commemorate, and throw out some fun stats!
- 500 sets
- £5000 to charity (plus another £500), which with giftaid means £6875 in total
- 99,000 2mm RGB LEDs
- 31,500 5mm RGB LEDs
- 4000 3 pin headers hand soldered!
- 13km of servo wire
- Shipped to 23 countries
I really can’t believe all the positive feedback I’ve been getting for these lights. They started off as a project for myself, then my curiosity took me down the path of seeing how to get something mass produced. Once I realised just how much the savings were when buying in bulk I had to have a go at a part run.
Theres been a few hiccups along the way, with bad batches of boards arriving due to either my error or manufacturing errors, but I’ve managed to not loose money overall which is all I’m bothered about.
This hobby and the community around it have been so much fun and opened up doors to me that I never thought would be possible! Thanks again to all those who have bought sets and indirectly contributed to the charity work we do as a club.
Can’t express how honored and excited I was to be the 500 purchas.
And on a personal note…the lights exceeded my expectations and now my R2D2 feels more lifelike.
Thanks again
Thanks for the kind words! 😀
Hello and congratulations for all your sales and I wish you everything continues as well.
I have a big problem, by trying to connect a DFminiPlayer I reversed 2 wires and I certainly deteriered my card ESP32!
I have 2 other ESP WROOM 32 cards but they have more pins and I need help to reconnect everything.
Could you help me?
Thank you.
Hi,
There are two common types of ESP32 dev boards, and you need to have the one with 30 pins to work on the astropixels board.
Darren.

Hi,
Unfortunately to make new boards is quite expensive especially for one offs. Getting them manufactured only works when I order a lot of them at once (I order astropixels in batches of 200)
I think it cost me about £1000 to prototype the astropixels initially.
How much bigger are you printing it?
